Hello! – Bright and Happy Watercolour Card

Today I have a bright and happy HELLO card to share with you.  This card has a embossed resist watecolour background using this gorgeous Moroccan Mosaic pattern.

Inspiration

I took my inspiration from an Altenew class called Creative Watercolour Media, which is one of their Level 2 classes and one that I actually purchased a while back before starting on AECP.  Each lesson features a different technique to use with watercolour and I decided to use the Emboss Resist technique which is one of my favourites and really fun to do as it gives really great results.

Overview of my card process

I used the Moroccan Mosaic stamp set to stamp out my background on some watercolour paper, which I then heat embossed using clear embossing powder. This background stamp is a 6″ square so I cut my paper to be 6 inches wide and then I would cut off the extra once I had finished painting it.

I decided to use my Altenew Watercolour Palette to paint it as I love the colours.  You can also use reinkers for this technique but I don’t have any.

I decided on three colours –  FRESH LEMON (yellow), SUNKISSED (orange), and PUFFY HEART (pink) – as I wanted something bright and vibrant and also because these three colours mix very well together in the event of any overlapping.  I started painting all the little stars in Fresh Lemon using the wet on wet technique and a water brush, wetting only the areas that I wanted to paint at the time and allowing them to dry before moving on to the next colour.

Once the yellow was dry, I moved on to the Sunkissed (orange) colour working in the same way.

Then I filled in all the remaining areas with the Puffy Heart (pink) which really made the design come to life!

Once all the paint was dry I trimmed my card down to 6 x 6″ and then painted around all the white edges using the Puffy Heart colour. (At this point my phone shut off, and I had to switch to using my camera).

I chose the Mega Hello die to add my sentiment to the front of the card using black cardstock.

After cutting the word out in black card, I decided to add some dimension to it by cutting it out of black foam to mount it on.

Since my card background was heat embossed, I decided to heat emboss the HELLO with shiny black embossing powder.

I glued my heat embossed diecut onto the black foam and then adhered it to my card.  Here’s a closer look at the dimension… (and my phone came back to life too, just in time for the final photos!)

Final touches – I mounted the card on a lime green card base, which you can’t see in the photos but it looks really vibrant and happy when you open the card. I also edged the card with Black Soot Archival Ink.

Thoughts

I love watercolouring so I really enjoyed making this card.  I’ve used this stamp set a few times but never in this way, and I was curious to see how it would turn out as the example in the class used large florals.  I really love the shiny black embossed word against the bright and vibrant background.  I hope you enjoyed reading about this card and that you find inspiration from it.
