Hey friends!

I have another card to share with you tonight – this one is fresh from the craft room as I just finished it half an hour ago!

I took my inspiration from an Altenew class called Magical Marker Techniques, which is one of their Level 2 classes and it’s all about things you can do with markers. I have to confess that I am not a fan of colouring with markers, I prefer other colouring mediums like coloured pencils or watercolour, so I was not really looking forward to this class.  However, I was pleasantly surprised because there were lots of other alternatives for using your markers.  Each lesson in the class features a different technique and I was inspired by the idea of colouring metallic stickers with alcohol markers and also using alcohol markers to make a background.

Overview of my card process

I have some really old metallic stickers somewhere but I couldn’t find them, however I did find these equally old metallic silver glitter alphabet stickers so I decided to try out my markers on them.  I did some testing, just trying out random colours to see which ones I liked best.  I do have a very limited supply of alcohol markers as I don’t tend to use them much so the colour choices were limited.  They do make these old cheap stickers look so much better though!

I was wondering what to use the stickers on as I wanted to use something Altenew but didn’t know whether to make a stamped background or a watercoloured background or what, and then I was flicking through my paper stash and remembered the Altenew Celestial paper pack.  I love this one so much, I really don’t want to use it all up but I decided I had to sacrifice this blue galaxy background because it is just so gorgeous.  That was when inspiration struck for real – glittery silver stickers, galaxy background – I starting singing the Coldplay song A Sky Full Of Stars, and that’s when I knew that that line had to go on my card as the sentiment! I placed the stickers on the paper and started to colour them in with a dark teal marker, as I was working my way down, I liked how it looked with one side left as silver and decided to only colour half the words in teal.

If you’re not familiar with the song, here are the lyrics

‘Cause you’re a sky, ’cause you’re a sky full of stars
I’m gonna give you my heart
‘Cause you’re a sky, ’cause you’re a sky full of stars
‘Cause you light up the path
I don’t care, go on and tear me apart
I don’t care if you do ooh ooh
‘Cause in a sky, ’cause in a sky full of stars
I think I saw you
‘Cause you’re a sky, you’re a sky full of stars
Such a heavenly view
You’re such a heavenly view

Now that I knew what I wanted to do, I set to making my alcohol marker background using some teals and blue markers on my craft mat and spraying it with surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol) then smooshing a piece of glossy card stock down into it.

Makes a bit of a mess and does stain the craft mat a bit but totally worth it because look how pretty it is, and it perfectly matches the galaxy paper!

So I have full A4 sheet of alcohol inked card stock now and I really didn’t want to waste any of it because it was all so pretty, so I decided to leave as wide a margin as possible around the 6 x 6 inch Celestial paper, and ended up cutting it down to an 8 inch square.

I then took some A4 white card stock and cut one piece to 8 x 8 inch square and a second piece to 8 x 8.5 inch, with a crease at the half inch mark, then folded and glued them together to make an 8 x 8 inch square card. Meanwhile I did a few more things to my card front – I added silver splatters to the centre panel and edged the paper with silver metallic paint, and I added pearlescent blue splatters to the alcohol background and edged that panel with the pearlescent blue paint.  Then glued the celestial paper on to the centre of the alcohol background. They really look like they belong together!

The final step was to adhere my card front to the card base I made and call this one done!

Since I don’t like colouring with markers I do tend to forget I even own any markers lol and this class has reminded me how flexible and useful they can be for doing techniques rather than straight up colouring.  I will definitely be doing more of this in the future and making use of the markers I do have.  This is the 8th Level 2 class I have completed and so there are only two more classes till I finish this level!

I hope you enjoyed reading about this card and that you find inspiration from it.
