Project Green Crochet Socks Completed – Day 26 of Blog Along with Effy

Hello everyone!  Here’s some good news – I finished my green socks!  Actually I finished them last week and have been wearing them, but haven’t had a chance to take the photos and write the post until now (too many other things on the agenda).  I’ve been moving furniture for three days, totally exhausted and aching everywhere but still managed to keep up with the blog along thanks to scheduled posts – yesterday’s post includes a recipe for some very tasty biscuits! (linked at the end of this post if you’re interested)   It does seem to be quieter on the weekends, maybe less people are blogging/commenting and probably enjoying some much needed down time, not slogging away at rearranging the furniture lol.  Anyway, we are in the final week of the blog along with only four more posts to go!  Really can’t believe I’ve managed to blog every day so far!   Here come the socks!

I wrote a progress update about these socks on Day 4 of the Blog Along as they only took me a week to make (two years and a week lol).  I had started them two years ago, put them down, forgot about them and then found them half finished and decided since it was still cold, that I would finish them and make my feet happy (and warm).  All I had to do was turn the heel and then zip up the leg at full speed and decide how I wanted to finish them at the top and I was done.

Turning the heel is easy but requires counting so you don’t mess up the turning part.  After that, it was back to the same stitch on the leg as was on the foot, and then making a crochet version of a rib to finish them off.  This starts off as a double crochet row as seen at the top of the socks below.

Then with a bit of front post/back post crochet magic, turns into a sort of rib-like cuff on the ends which finishes them off nicely with just a little bit of yarn left to weave in.  It’s great to wear the socks finally and also to check something off the UFO list!

What you probably don’t know is that I’m a left-handed crocheter!  My Dad taught me how to knit, apparently he knitted socks for soldiers when he was at primary school, I never thought to ask which war though, I just wanted to learn how to knit.  He could only do plain knitting, garter stitch, but it was enough to set me down the path of discovering other types of stitches and following patterns.  On the other hand (no pun intended) what I could not understand at that age was how to crochet and my Dad didn’t know either.  It’s funny since crochet evolved from fishermen making their nets and my Dad was a keen fisherman so that might have been useful lol.

I could manage to do a chain and some kind of single crochet but patterns were all the wrong way round and I think, not very well helpful back when I was trying to learn and understand what I was doing.  I don’t have that problem now since I know how it works, which is just as well since the majority of patterns are designed for and by, right handed people.  There is one designer who offers both right and left handed versions of her video tutorials which are much appreciated by me.  Anyway, one day I saw a pattern in a magazine for a tartan blanket and I loved it immediately but it was a crochet pattern and I could not understand what she was doing.  I showed a friend and she loved the pattern too and decided to make the red version (I wanted the green version).  Well she started straight away and I watched her and still could not get what she was doing because it just looked wrong to me, but I was determined to work it out because I really wanted that blanket! Most of it was worked in treble crochet which is a tall stitch that works up quickly, and me not knowing what I was doing, didn’t think what I was doing could be right because the stitches were so tall lol.  I took it into work with me and showed my friend and of course she said it looked backwards to her but it did look like treble crochet!  Success!  After that, it was all crochet all the time, granny squares, flowers, handbags, hats, scarves, cowls, you name it I was making it.  I much prefer it to knitting for a few reasons but one of those reasons is that I tend to hold my needles weirdly.  I don’t knit in public lol but I can crochet in public with only the occasional comment about me using the wrong hand.

Here are my new socks!  Two balls of this yarn to make the socks, one ball per sock, and the yarn is called Fabel by Drops. It’s a 4 ply yarn, 25% polyamide and 75% wool, which is a good mix for socks as they keep their shape better with that little bit of elastic in them.  This print is called Guacamole so I had to buy it on the name alone!  Great for socks and easy to care for and wash in the machine, lovely and soft and nice and warm for socks.  The pattern repeat can start differently on each ball so if you want matching socks then you might have to unwind a ball to find the right place to start so both balls match, but as you can see, I don’t care about matchy matchy socks lol.  I have also made socks in the Picnic Pink pattern and wrist warmers in the Green/Turquoise variation so I really love the yarn!
