Feeling slightly better today, so I did more journalling and recycling…
Today’s Art . . .
Today’s art is this page that I made today. The grey background was already made in my journal using black pastel and gesso but was waiting to be used.
This is an entry for AJJ where the theme is recycling – see link at bottom of post. I’ve been saving these cat treat packets for a while as I thought the cats were too cute to throw away. The treats are little cubes of 100% freeze-dried chicken that two of out of my three cats enjoy and the third treats with disdain in the way that only a cat can. I also repurposed some book pages to cut out the birds.
I picked out the grey page in my journal as one that might go well with the colour of the cat treat packets, and glued them down. Once they were stuck down, I picked out some yellow acrylics that I could mix up to match the colour of the packets and painted around them to make them look more interesting and less square like a packet.
I used some paint pens to draw in more of the leaf-like shapes that were already printed on the packets, and I thought that the clear parts of the packets where the treats used to show through, looked a bit like cat eyes, so I made them into big green cat eyes, but I had to alter the direction of the one on the right so they weren’t facing in the same direction.
I wondered what the cats could be looking at and decided on birds, so I took a Sizzix bird die set and some book paper and cut out some little birds to perch along the top and drew a wire for them to hang on. I also had a tiny heart punch and used that to punch out some tiny hearts from the book paper. I had left one “Hi” from the “Hi Life” printed on the packet and so I added “sweet wings” word stickers to it as I’m sure those cats are looking up with love and hoping to play rather than considering the birds to be dinner. 🙂 To finish off, I splattered some of the green Posca over the page (I had been using it with a brush on my phone cover so I just wanted to use up what was on my brush).
Bonus Phone Cover . . .in progress
Since I had the acrylics and the Posca pens out I started painting my phone cover as well since I wanted a cat face on it.
The cover was originally grey, you can still see part of the original colour peeking through at the bottom, and I painted it pink last year and planned to have a pink cat on it, but did go any further as I wasn’t happy with it. I changed my mind today and painted over it with black Posca and green acrylic for the eyes. Now I am waiting for it to dry before adding details to it, but that will have to wait till tomorrow.

Art Journal Journey – Recycle, reuse, repurpose
This is an amazing way you used those packets. And the birds cut from book pages really added to the entry. They gave the cat’s eyes something to look for. The cat eyes were fabulous. Thanks for this recycled wonder you have shared with us at Art Journal Journey using Bleubeard’s and my theme. I look forward to seeing your completed case, too.
I like it.
