Today I’m back on the GSL blog to share this Valentine’s Day inspired card using some really cool chipboard pieces. Here’s the finished card:
My card today was going to be an easel style card with a shaker on the front, but as you can see, I made some changes and it is no longer an easel card but it is now hmmm, I guess it’s a trifold card(?) and it opens East to West instead of North to South lol. When I got this little niche heart frame I was trying to think outside the box and wondered what else I could do with it that would be different. So I decided to use it on a card instead of it usual purpose – btw if you want to see a beautiful example of it used in the normal way, check out Inner Child by my friend Betsy Skagen.
I’m not covering the whole tutorial in this post because I have already written it for my DT post, but I will comment on a few highlights and give some tips along the way.
This is my card base covered in Finnabair’s tissue paper and all creased and folded where it needed to be for the original easel card but as you can see the folds are still in the right place for the new design I had in mind.
I planned to use these little heart shaped sequins in my shaker but the only problem was that they were silver hearts, so I decided to quickly paint some of them red using alcohol ink! This took no time at all and the alcohol ink dries very fast, so I would encourage you to try this trick if you find you don’t have the colour you want.
Back to the heart frame for my shaker, and I decided to use some embossing powder on it – I’m using embossing powder on all the chippies actually – and this one is a nice pinky purple Embossing Glitter from Wow called Royal Crush. Then I heat embossed the LOVE word and the heart with another WOW embossing glitter called Red Glitz – I am not usually that into red but this embossing glitter looks amazing! Here are all the pieces heat embossed and ready to go!
Meanwhile back at the card base… I added some magenta and violet liquid acrylic paints, and metallic plum acrylic to the card and sprayed it with water to make it run down the page and get all streaky, and then dried it with a heat tool (ie my hairdryer!). Then I added some gold metallic, violet acrylic and white paint splatters and left it to dry.
Using some Finnabair Icing Paste in gold, I added some gold highlights to the LOVE word, the little red heart and around the edges of the heart frame. I really love the effect of this paste!
Once the paint was dry on the card base, it was time for some random stamping! I used some Black Archival ink and this tiny little “Soulmate” stamp, and then edged the card with the same gold Icing Paste as before.
And here’s where I changed my mind about the easel card! Up until this point, the poor thing thought it was going to be an easel card but then I just happened to place the LOVE word on the card while it was laying horizontally and I really liked how that looked and then it hit me that it would also work in this direction if I just repositioned the heart frame box at 90 degrees from my original plan. And so it became a trifold card instead! It’s funny how these things work out.
I hope you will try making a little shaker card using this lovely little heart niche. I’d love to see what you create.
