Today I am happy to share with you another page from my small handmade art journal.  I have to say that I am enjoying working in this smaller size, which surprises me as usually I work on much larger pages because I feel like I don’t have enough space.  This seems to be contrary to how other people feel and large blank surfaces are daunting, I look at it and think that there no room! How will I fit it all in?  I find this with cardmaking too, those tiny American sized cards are just too small for me, and I make very large cards.

So this art journal page was made as my DT inspiration project for the October challenge over on More Than Words Challenge Blog.

Asking a lot of scrapbooking people to create something without flowers seems to have thrown them for a loop but personally I loved it and there is so much scope for NIGHT and NO FLOWERS.  I will be curious to see what people come up with for their challenge entries.
I have a few close ups to share with you but not a full blow by blow account of my page this time.  Sometimes I start my journal pages with some scribbly writing ie my normal handwriting lol.  This might be actual journaling or just something random.  In this case, I was practicing writing the quote over and over in the hope that when it came to writing it on the final page it would be good.  I still wasn’t happy with it 🙁

To add some texture I collaged scrunched up tissue paper over the whole background.

Once that was all dry, I started to add paint starting with dark colours.
Then I added some gorgeous blues, trying to keep the area for my moon untouched.
So I have this scene building, moon, sky, ground, but what to put on the ground?  I found this leftover gift wrap from Christmas and cut out the trees and the deer, and I still have some strips of book paper left from August projects, so I added that in too.
The gift wrap was green but it doesn’t matter, I’m still using it.
A bit more paint added to blend in the book paper and the trees and deer.  I really like this strange lightness that has appeared along the top of the ground.  I don’t actually know what happened but I like it!

Here’s a close up of the ground.  It reminds me of distressed denim and looks really cool.

Can’t have a night sky without stars, so here’s a closer look at my stars.  The lines from the scrunched up tissue remind me of a star chart or constellation map.

Finished page.  I love how my Christmas trees seem to be glowing now.

I’d love to see what you make so don’t forget to enter the More Than Words Main Challenge which is open till the end of the month!  Let me know what you think of my page in the comments below.

Challenges

Art Journal Journey’s new October Challenge is all about lines – does my star map in the sky count as lines in the context of the challenge? It’s what I thought about while I was writing the post, so we’ll see 🙂

Just beautiful – a wonderful quote and a wonderful page to go with it. Wintry night sky magic.

Thanks for your thought about how to get round the nonsense of New Blogger (#newbloggersucks)… I can give it a try, but given my paragraphs always vary in length as do the number of photos per post, I imagine eventually I’m going to have to try moving things in relation to one another and that’s when the fun starts… but it’s definitely worth a go. Thank you for taking the time to stop by with the suggestion.

I like the moody feel of this spread. It is very dark, which adds to the moody feel of the night sky. The bright moon in the upper left corner was brilliant and added just the right amount of color/lightness needed. I like that you likened the sky to a star map. The lines are perfect for Chris’s theme at Art Journal Journey, too. Thanks for joining us this month. I also hope to be more punctual this month, too, because I love your art.

What a stunning page. I love the denim look at the bottom of the page and the blue is a gorgeous blue sky on a dark starry night. Love the texture you have got through your use of tissue beneath the paint – it makes for a very atmospheric night somewhere miles from anywhere with just the trees and the lone stag. Beautiful.

Wow Elle, I LOVE this page. It reminds me of a winter night with the bright dark sky (those words don’t sound like they go together do they?) and all the stars. And nice line too! I am really happy you joined us again at Art Journal Journey. Thanks! It’s nice to have you here. Happy October. Hugs-Erika
