Hello everyone!

It’s Day 29 of the blog along with Effy – only one more day to go!  I will be sad when it’s over but I also need to charge my batteries as May is going to be a busy month (I have some Guest Hosting to prepare for!) I am back to the book cover ATCs for #the100dayproject as I have a bit of catching up to do before Day 100 on May 10th!  Also I have started experimenting with larger versions of my ATC book covers in my art journal (like the hare I did a few days ago) and so I also have another AJ version of one of the ATCs to share.

The book is an autobiography by Alice Tarbuck, called A Spell in the Wild (a year and six centuries of magic). Dr. Alice Tarbuck is also the author of the poetry collection Grid and is an academic working at the University of Dundee. I can recommend it.  It works through the year like a kind of diary with chapters for each month, and that format reminds me of another book I can also recommend called, The Wild Remedy (how nature heals you) by Emma Mitchell.  Funnily enough she has provided a quote for this book!

Anyway, here is the book with it’s very pretty pink cover with blackberries on it and here is also my blank page!

My plan was to work on the ATC version and the journal version together, and then if I had time, try to do more ATCs. It actually takes longer than you’d think to do something so small!  I’m always amazed at how much time has passed when I am working on these, but I do really like doing them.

I got both of them to the point where they were painted pink so I started working on the other ATC book covers.

I was thinking about non-fiction books this time – a break from all that fiction!

I left them to dry and went back to the page to add more details.

Then I added a quote from inside the book and a condensed version on the ATC and called it done!

The quote is actually deep joy not great joy but somehow I wrote great joy anyway, oh well,  Just don’t tell anyone lol.

Here’s a look at the other ATC book covers that I finished just as it was getting dark.  This one is self explanatory, no?

This is a lovely book of crafty things to do to help you get through the cold winter months with your sanity intact.  It is by the same author I mentioned above who wrote the book about the healing effects of nature and it’s full of all kinds of things, crochet, jewellery, baking etc.

This one was a mistake!  I was supposed to be working on non-fiction books this time but the cover drew my attention and I ended up doing it today.  It is absolutely fiction, and not particularly good fiction, that goes a bit weird at the end lol but anyway I do like the cover!

This last one is hard to read in the light but it comes from a poem discussed in the book.  This is a book about Shetland from the author of the Jimmy Perez Shetland series. Great book series btw and also an excellent TV show from the BBC.  The poem is called Winter Comes In by Jack Renwick and it is written in Shetland dialect:

Grey dawn brakkin ower troubled watters,
Da Soond laek a burn wi da rip o da tide;
Da Mull, black an grim, ida first o da daylicht
Wi da sea brakkin white on his nortmast side.

Yowes kruggin closs ida lee o a daek-end,
Creepin frae a chill at bites ta da bon;
Solan an scarf aa wirkin inshore,
A sign at da best o da wadder is don.

Hail sheetin doon wi a Nort wind ahint it,
Blottin oot laand an sea frae da scene,
An iron coortin closin ower aa thing:
Winter has come ta da islands ageen.

If you’re curious what that might sound like, you can listen to the poem being read here.

Here’s a look at all five ATC book covers together.  Between these and the journal page, it took over six hours!

I’m just finishing this post with minutes to spare before it is no longer the 29th!

Let me know what you think in the comments, and as always, thanks for reading!

These are awesome, I love them so much! Especially being a collector of ATCs. I have some beautiful ones in my collection 🙂 This is such a great idea I might have to do some on my blank ATCs!! It’s been a while since I made any. I also agree it takes a long time to do small things. Being a face painter, it drives me crazy when parents ask for something small on the cheek to try and make it quicker not understanding it actually takes me LONGER to do cheek art than a half or full-face design!
