Hi Crafty Friends!  I have another art journal spread to share today. This one is using the Hazy Days Collection papers from 7 Dots Studio, lots of bits and pieces and a LOT of brown!

The Finished Spread

I am using my Finnabair Mixed Media Journal for this one, spiral bound, so it is really easy to add and remove pages to work on them.

The Process

art journal spreadI started off by tearing up and applying some of this gorgeous paper from 7 Dots Studio.  I really love the texture and colours in this paper.  I basically wanted to have it in each of the four outer corners. Then covering the pages with a layer of transparent gesso, and once that was dry, I applied some Linen Impasto paint to the pages through the Manuscript stencil.  Once that was dry I then applied some Burnt Sienna liquid acrylic paint around the edges and letting it run and drip down the page.

I took the Art Daily stamp set with the vintage typewriters etc and stamped randomly over the pages with Black Soot Archival ink. I also added this cute little bird stamp from another set to perch on top of one of the typewriters.  I added some obligatory black and white splatters to the pages and then started playing around with some of these Tim Holtz Industrial Bigz XL die cuts.  I had already cut some out in silver and green mirror cardstock for another project so I was just playing around with the leftovers to see what I wanted to do with them here.  Then I started adding some Mechanical Moulded pieces to them and I could see where I wanted to go with it.

Making the Rusty Metal Bits

First things first, I needed to cut more of the silver Industrial as I couldn’t cover up the green enough to camouflage it.  Then to make it more distressed and vintage-y I painted them all with the burnt sienna paint.  I really love how these turned out, they look like they have been left somewhere wet and got all rusty!

Next Steps

I picked out some little screws and nuts, and other bits and pieces from the Mechanical Mould set, and painted them with Raven Black Metallique paint.

moulded and painted steampunk elements

I pulled out some other elements to use on this piece – the “story” shadow script word was leftover from another project and the little typewriter die also.  I painted the typewriter with black liquid acrylics and then I used a Visible Image Stamp to stamp some typewriter letters on acetate to make them look like they were coming out of the typewriter.  I then glued everything down and left it to dry.  To match the “story” word font, I cut more letters from the Sizzix Bigz XL Alphabet Die – Cutout Script and glued them together to make them look like words instead of separate letters.  This is actually the same font as the Shadow Script word dies just slightly larger.  To mimic the shadow effect, I coloured a black shadow around “your” and “matters” with my polychromos pencils.
