This spread is now finished and I really want to name it “Stay Curious Mermaid and See What Happens” because that cat has big teeth and looks hungry, so maybe it’s a role reversal and the curious mermaid gets eaten by the Cheshire Cat lookalike lol Scroll down to the end of the post to compare the unfinished to the finished versions of this spread.
I am working on a couple of art journal spreads so I thought I would upload photos to show the process as I work on it. Very much a WIP! Completed 8 Jul 19
I seem to have so many WIP at the moment ( how did that happen?) so I really wanted to get at least one thing completed, and decided that this one was the closest to completion and would be the quickest to cross off my to-do list. And here she is – the curious mermaid herself – all she needed was some AQUA in her hair – of course that’s what was missing all along lol. And some splatters. She had to have some splatters! I also added the Hello and fabulous diecuts that I had leftover from another project. They are already silver heat embossed, so after they were glued down, I outlined them with a Copic Multiliner. Other than that, I finished colouring in the sea background, and then I die cut some mermaid-related items from Jane Davenport’s Artomology collection out of some turquoise glitter card and added them to her hair. I really wanted to put that mermaid tail in the cat’s mouth, but decided it was close enough, and that’s what got me thinking about cats and fish, and a title was born.
PROCESS
I am using my large Dylusions journal and making a two page spread. So this spread was inspired by these Jane Davenport Good Face stencils on the right in the photo below.
I was curious to see what they looked like, so I tried out all three of them in my journal and I forgot to take a photo of them before I started colouring!
So I started very simply by just wanting to colour in the face stencil just for a bit of fun and with no plan in mind at all. I used Jane’s Magic Wand pencils for that. Then I decided to give her some hair, and at this point I got a little carried away lol. Still using the pencils in red shades, and then I don’t know why, but I decided to draw a very big mouth on the other side, which after I had drawn it reminded me so much of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, that I decided that’s what it should be!.
I really really wanted the teeth to stand out and racked my brain thinking what I could use, and then opened a drawer and spotted the liquid pearls – it was exactly what I was looking for! I drew in the lines between the teeth, and then used my Mermaid Markers to make the cat more pink and shiny, and also used the red toned Mermaid Markers on her hair. Then after I had drawn in some waves – I have been thinking about the sea a lot lately – decided to colour them in with more Mermaids.
So this is where I left it to dry, and I need to think about how I want to finish it off. When I know what I want to do, then I will come back and update the page. UPDATED AND COMPLETED 8 JUL 19
