The second of three Halloween cards I made on the same day – do you think they look similar?
The Finished Card
I had this idea to make some stamps from my Sizzix dies and use them on the alcohol ink backgrounds with alcohol lift ink to create a spooky ghostly effect. I did this last year with some other stamps when the lift ink came out, and I liked the effect. When I saw these little ghost dies from Sizzix I knew I wanted to try it again and make my own ghost stamps to create little ghosts that would swirl about in a dark alcohol ink background randomly.
The Process
First of all I die cut the little ghosts using craft foam and stuck them to an acrylic block. Then I set to making my dark alcohol ink background using black and purple alcohol inks. For the next step, it’s important that the alcohol ink is completely dry! Then using the Alcohol Lift ink pad, stamp little ghosts on the background and “lift” the ink off, dabbing with a soft cloth or paper, and wiping it off. At this point the ink is on your stamp so you could use it to stamp onto something else, giving you a twofer (two for one) background. I stamped them repeatedly on the background, often overlapping, until I was happy with the result.

Then I die cut the words Spooky and Boo from Gina K Silver cardstock using the Sizzix Wonderland alphabet bigz die. I made an easel style card using Gina K Key Lime cardstock and stuck the alcohol ink background down on to it. Then I adhered the die cut letters, and finally stamped Happy Halloween on the card in Black Soot Archival, using an older stamp set – Crazy Talk – by Tim Holtz. The final step was edging all the sides of the card with Black Soot ink.
Final Thoughts
I really love making these alcohol lift backgrounds especially using my own stamps I’ve made using dies. It’s a great effect, and works really well with dark backgrounds.
