Sending Fall Wishes – Mixed Media Card

Today I am posting a project for the fourth AECP Level 1 Class I have taken – Let It Shine taught by Carissa Wiley.  I really enjoyed this class – who doesn’t like a bit of bling!  Links to all my class posts are at the bottom of the post.

Inspiration

This class was all about using various techniques to add shine to your cards, and there are many ways to do this including using embossing powders, metallic cardstock, foils, glitter etc.  It is very hard to resist heat embossing everything as I really love that particular technique but I also have some really nice metallic papers and some foils I bought a while back and forgot about, so I thought I would focus on those techniques.

Overview of my card process

Now I actually made a card for this class at the same time as making cards for the layering and irresistible inking classes, and while the card ticked all the boxes for the required techniques, I wasn’t very happy with it, so I decided to put it aside and get on with a different class card, and come back to this class card later.  I will link this first card at the end of this post so you can compare with the card I made today.

Firstly I had made this background using my gel plate and the Altenew Leaf Burst stencil and I really love the vivid green but when I made it last week it was not intended for anything in particular, so I decided to make it my Let It Shine card background.  It is quite dark and not at all shiny, so this might be a challenge!

I had recently bought a few of Heidi Swapp’s rolls of foil and pulled out this Hot Pink foil, which I thought looked great contrasting with the green.  I used double-sided tape around all four sides of my green background, then pressed the Hot Pink foil over it allowing it to stick to the tape. I didn’t like it looking “perfect” so I scratched it up a bit just using my fingernails.

I had already painted a bunch of these leaf clusters with Altenew watercolours and had some spares and I thought that the colours looked so vivid against the green and hot pink, and I wanted to use them in this card, but I needed a sentiment to match.  I decided to paint a piece of watercolour paper in matching colours and used that to die cut the word FALL using the Bold Alphabet dies (love these!)

Meanwhile I added some paint splatters to the background using some Metallique paints by Finnabair – Phoenix Feather and Unicorn Hair.  After I did that, I liked how the orange of the Phoenix Feather looked on the background so I decided to add it to the edges of my foil, just painting it on with a small paintbrush, and then using the leftover paint and some paper towel to dab it onto my leaves and letters.

I played around with the placement of the leaves before deciding to add some heat embossing so that my FALL card now read SENDING FALL WISHES. I used gold embossing powder to tie it all together.  Here is the finished card:

Thoughts

I really love the colours in this card and there is enough “shine” without there being too much shine.  I used foil, heat embossing and metallic paint to create my shine.

Oh and here is the first card I made.  There is really nothing wrong with it except it doesn’t make me happy like the above card does.  But what do you think?
