Trick or Treat – Halloween-Inspired Washi Tape Dispenser Box

I’ve been working on some Halloween makes and have another one to share with you today.  This time it’s a sweet little box to keep your washi tape in and would look great on your desk or craft table!  This one uses another Sizzix die to make the box and I filled it with my favourite Tim Holtz Halloween washi tape!

Here’s the little box – and it is little! – as you can see from the photo, it takes about five rolls of washi tape depending on the width of your washi tape.  In this case, I used the Tim Holtz Halloween washi tape and they are quite small compared to the usual size washi tape that you can see outside the box (lime and orange).  There are no process photos for this post as it is not a tutorial post and the box is very easy to put together.  Btw this die is now retired but Scrapbook.com have eight of them in stock at half price on clearance atm.  If you don’t want to use it as a washi tape dispenser, you can cover the holes in the sides and fill the box with anything you like.  One example I saw was putting some cute little macarons in it!  It might also fit some artist trading coins in there but I would need to check the size to be 100%.

So, here’s how it was put together.  I cut the pieces out of mat board, glued them together and painted them with black gesso.  Then it took me an age to decide how I wanted to decorate the box!  Does anyone else have this kind of indecision or is it just me?  Anyway, I finally decided to use this black and white decoupage paper with skeletons on it, since it definitely fit with the Halloween theme I was going for.  I loved the Treat Not Trick theme over on Funkie Junkie Challenge blog and decided to enter this box.

My box was covered in black gesso which limited the colours of decoupage or tissue paper I could use on top and still have the colours show up, so I decided to use this black and white decoupage paper, and actually it showed up really well.  I was worried that the white would be a little muted but it’s nice and bright.  I adhered it to the box using Deco Arts Matte Medium, and then when it was dry, I covered it in Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint (love that stuff!).  I remember not that long ago, using crackle paint finishes on furniture – remember when that was a thing? – and buying much larger tins of the stuff from the DIY store, for probably a lot less hahaha

Anyway. this die also cuts the end pieces for the sides of the box which can be used to cover up the holes if you don’t want to use it as a washi tape dispenser, or you can use them to attach a straw or a length of dowel to hold it in place so the washi doesn’t slip off.   I used a black plastic straw because it’s best to put these old straws to some kind of use rather than disposing of them!

When the crackle paint was dry and lovely and crackled, I added one of these Tim Holtz Halloween Quote Chips on the top and this little project was complete!
