Hello again

Today, or actually tonight, I am sharing a new art journal page I created today and the process of how it came to be.  But first, here’s a quick look at the finished page.

and a close up so you can read the beautiful words which come from one of my favourite songs.

How this came to be

I was working on a DT project for next month and at the same time thinking about a couple of challenges I wanted to enter.  I like to mull these things over for a while to see what pops up.  I had also just managed to clean my table yesterday, so I actually had a reasonably clean space in which to work because I had cleared off most of what was piled up on the table and put it where it belonged.  There were a few bits and pieces still lying around though that had been intended for Valentine’s projects that I never got around to creating in the end – including these red hearts that I had covered in Red Glitz Embossing Glitter.  I had actually cut them all out, they are from a TH Bigz die called Heartfelt, and it cuts multiple hearts in various sizes and shapes, so I had already used a few, but had quite a lot leftover and wanted to use them in something, another card maybe, but instead, they decided they wanted to be here, on this page.

These frames were also cut for another project today, and they are actually cut out from old cat food boxes (waste not, want not) and this piece of music paper popped out of a stack of paper this afternoon, took me completely by surprise because I have had that for years and years and is something I photocopied when I lived in a totally different country lol.  And yet it decided to show itself today.  I put it aside thinking I really should do something with that.  I was working on another project, so I just happened to sit the frames on top of it and the leftover hearts and then something just clicked!

I set this aside while I worked on another project, so I didn’t get to this one till much later in the day, but while I was working on the other thing, I kept thinking about this music, and the hearts and then I started humming.  Of course it had to be Dance Me To The End Of Love, a wonderful song by Leonard Cohen.   It did occur to me that I could probably stamp it out somehow, using some alphabet stamps but in the end, I went to the computer and typed out the lyrics and printed them off.  My original plan as you can see above, was to have one of the hearts in each of the three smaller frames, but once I had the lyrics, they absolutely had to go in one of the frames.

This is one of my 8 inch square Dylusions journals, and I needed to put something around the music to hide the journal paper.  I did think about painting it but then I found some scraps of this Tim Holtz gold metallic cardstock.  It was like two corner pieces where I seemed to have cut out the middles, so I could put them together to make one square piece.  I sanded around the edges to take some of the shine off and then went over it with some Vintage Photo Distress Archival.  After gluing that on the page, I stuck down the sheet music, and then arranged the other elements on top.  After cutting out the lyrics to fit in the frame, I had some of that verse left over, so I added them to the top and bottom of the page (which also helped to hide the joins in the metallic card!).

I love this page, and I hope you do too, and if you haven’t listened to much Leonard Cohen, I am encouraging you to do so, starting with this beautiful song.  The lyrics are below and also a video of the man himself, singing it.

Leonard’s wonderful words

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I’m gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Oh, let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We’re both of us beneath our love, we’re both of us above
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I’m gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

You had me at “recycled.” Like you, I waste nothing. I love how you cut the frames from leftover cat food boxes. I also like how you repurposed the hearts so they didn’t go to waste. This is another exceptional entry, and I am thrilled to have found your incredible blog. Thanks so much for also sharing this journal page with us using my February theme at Art Journal Journey. I love your style.
