Good morning, and can you believe it’s February already? What happened to January? IDK. It continues to hard to keep track of days doesn’t it? Nothing really seems to change but the dates on the calendar keep changing anyway.
So now it’s February and traditionally the month most associated with love and romance, I have this art journal page to share with you inspired by romance and roses. It’s my DT project for the new MTW February Main Challenge. When I was flicking through this old magazine from February 2019 …
I came across this page promoting vegan beauty products…
What a great find! I wasn’t even looking for something for this page at the time, and it just popped up! The magazine is a bit larger than my art journal so I torn up the page to make it fit and pasted it down with some matte medium across both pages.
I found some other potential collage materials that would work with the colour palette.
After all the collage was dry, I used some light pink acrylic paint on the page to match the background and the roses. Then I used some PITT pens to draw over some of the design on the napkin to bring out more of the details and add more flowers to the design.
I added some gold splatters to the background and used some paint pens to highlight the centres in the plum blossom flowers.
Sometimes it’s hard to show the gold in a flat lay photo so I angled it towards the light for a better look at all that shiny gold.
The gold I used is this Liquitex bright gold ink, you can see the bottle at the top of the photo. I’ve been using it so much lately I got worried I would run out and so I had to buy a backup bottle just in case – I’m not hoarding it really LOL
Then I added these small black word stickers for my title – Romance of Flowers
I added more green details using Pitt pens and smudging it into the page. Her lower arm looks a strange colour in this photo, this is because the ink was still wet when I took the photo but it looks much better when dry lol.
And here’s the finished page…
Here’s my DT inspiration photo which you can find on the challenge announcement post today. Click for a much bigger version.

Elle, I just love what you’ve done here with the magazine image and then the delicate napkin, adding your own touches of pen, ink and paint to make it your own! Love those gold splashes! While I’m here, let me thank you for joining in the fun at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog!
Wow, you transformed that magazine page into something amazing! I love the flowers you added and that girl. I need to learn to do this. So interesting, so pretty, and so inspiring. Wow.
Gosh Elle! How beautifully that napkin teams with the magazine page. I love how you’ve allowed a few words to peek through from below and added more of your own. Thank you for sharing it with us at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog xx
I followed along as you created this beauty. I so love how you shared both your thoughts and actions, including your tools and techniques you applied. You have used two of my favorites: magazine images and napkins. You created a fabulous spread for us at Art Journal Journey, dear Elle.
