Just by accident I saw the other day that MFT were running their annual Card Design Superstar contest and I thought I would try my luck. There are three categories, CAS Genius, Coloring Virtuoso, Innovation Master so I pulled out my MFT collection and wondered what I could create… and possibly could I enter all three categories?? Especially since the deadline for entries was Sunday 22nd!
I decided to start with the Innovation category as an idea popped into my head and I wondered if I could make it happen…
The Finished Card
And I made a short video showing the Cheese Wheel of Misfortune in action!
In the beginning…
I knew I wanted to use this polka dot die because it reminds me of Swiss cheese (I know, weird right?) and the more I thought about the cheese, the more the idea formed in my head that I could make an interactive card using this die as the “interactive” element even though it’s not an interactive die – but that’s what innovation is all about right?
I spent way too much time trying to make my idea of a 3D cheese wedge become reality, and when I finally achieved that, I realised that it would not work with the rest of my idea lol, I will keep the cheese wedge idea for another card though, it just won’t work for this one.
So I started over, and the Cheese Wheel of Misfortune was born!
One of the great things about this die is that there are no edges to it, so it cuts out the polka dots but not the rectangle, so you could keep going and cut out a much bigger piece or you can do as I did and leave a wide border around it. I wanted to use this to make some kind of stand for my wheel. I did a few tests using white scrap paper before cutting into my good cardstock.
I used a drawing compass to draw the circles the size that I wanted them – one for the cheese and one for the prize wheel which will be the moving part. At first I made this out of acetate (you can see it in the photos above) and then realised I was just making it harder for myself considering I would have to stamp and colour on it or stamp and fussy cut white card and then glue them on, so I made the wheel from white cardstock (110lb Neenah for strength). I used the little cats from BB Cool Cat and BB I Knead You and some of the other stamps from those sets, also the little bird from I Love You Furever. I had planned to use some of the flowers and hearts from that set too, to include in the wheel but there really wasn’t enough space in the end.
The middle…
I used Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink on the background with a blending tool, then all the elements are coloured using my Polychromos – there is even a silver pencil for the fishes! I used Distress Archival in Hickory Smoke to stamp everything, then coloured and fussy cut the cats, cushions, shelves etc and then attached them to the panel. I added some depth to the wheel using Fossilized Amber Distress Ink. I used a brad to attach the prize wheel to the card panel, then used the wheel base and the shelf to attach the cheese wheel with double-sided foam to the card panel. The little kitty holding on to the wheel is where the second piece of foam tape is hidden, to hold the wheel securely. Some areas of the cheese wheel are open which is where the kitties can snatch the prizes from, and there is a larger opening on the right side to allow you to turn the wheel – as shown in the video. After everything was in place, I added some other elements on to the card, around the bottom of the wheel – the yarn, the fish skeletons, the mouse etc – oh and the little thought bubble with the bird inside – that makes me LOL.
The end…
The idea is that the Cheese Wheel of Misfortune is of course for this family of cheeky cats who are all trying to catch the prizes from the wheel. My favourite is Mission Impossible Cat but Fat Cat on the Shelf is doing ok with his prizes as he has already eaten one fish. The little cat on the cushions is waiting for Mission Impossible Cat to drop some prizes for him to catch, and the last little cat is hanging on to the wheel hoping to swipe a prize or two and perhaps he is throwing them up to Fat Cat on the Shelf haha
It was a lot of fun to make and I will definitely making another one and keep working on the cheese wedge idea now I have my prototypes!
