The Danse Macabre

Hello friends,

Here is my second page for today.  I still have four pages left for this month, three of them are finished and one still needs some work, which I will have to do tomorrow as it’s too dark now.

Today’s spread is inspired by The Danse Macabre poem and this fun fabric!  I once saw someone make something from this fabric and although I didn’t know the name of the fabric, the collection, the designer or the brand, I was luckily able to track it down and buy some.

I started off by sticking the fabric into my journal using gel medium.  Then I spent some time painting the skulls with glow in the dark paint!  After they were dry, I drew around them with a black paint pen and coloured all the eye sockets etc black.  Then I die cut the letters for DANSE MACABRE using a Tim Holtz Sizzix alphabet die, and some white card that I had also painted with GITD paint.  I glued the letters in position and outlined them with a black pen.  Then I wrote out the start of the poem on the same GITD painted card and glued them in position.

And now the moment of truth, when the lights go out!  The skulls had more layers of GITD paint than the card did so they are showing up much brighter.

The Danse Macabre

According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle. His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.

Good gentles, wonder not
That robed as Death are we,
But dance wyth us and spite not
At our gentle mockery.
Mortal, be thou, and great or small
The Reaper shall make thy ende,
But blunt thy feare in dance and play,
Today Death is thy friende.
Till Death do us joine againe,
