Hello friends,

I have so many pages to share this month that it looks like will have to squeeze another page in today!  I should mention again that I decided to have one journal for October so all my pages for this month have now been bound into one single book, and I’m glad to have 31 pages plus the giant double-page foldout, but for RL reasons I missed a few days of posting and now I need to squeeze them all in before the end of the month!  So here is my second page for today!

today’s journal page . . .

Today’s spread is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and some of his poetry and a Corvid or two…

As I mentioned before, I make my own art journals, and start to combine them once I have a few pages, so for this October book, I had a bunch of pages combined and then a second bunch of pages combined, and then last week I decided to just bite the bullet and combine them all into one single book.  However, that then makes it more difficult (for me) to work in them rather than having the pages loose and flat so I painted the background of a few of the pages just to make it easier to get started.  This is one of those pages and it has something dark leaking through from the other side, and I probably would have been better making it a darker colour to hide that, but instead I painted it with Neocolour IIs in ochre, which is quite an orangey colour.  I wondered what to do with it after that, and then at the weekend I decided to add some Poe.  I drew Mr Poe with the raven and then used Neocolours and paint pens to add colour.   It took me more time than I had planned but it was an enjoyable few hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Then on the other side of the spread I drew a giant raven on a branch, and then copied out a couple of lines from one of his poems – Romance (1831) – the original text uses “dipt” instead of “dipped” but I changed it for my page.  The raven and the branch are also coloured with paint pens.

Let me know what you think in the comments.   As always, thanks for reading!Ingredients

I’ve been waiting to see an Edgar Allen Poe Halloween page. Did you draw all this? It is really amazing how you caught Poe’s likeness Elle. I do like this spread. And I know what you mean about squeezing in pages. I’m doing the same. Thanks for sharing with us at AJJ. Hope your week is going well, even if we aren’t too far into it. Hugs-Erika

Your sketch of Poe is delightful. I’m very fond of ravens and their harsh cries.
Though I have not heard one say “nevermore.”
