Happy Halloween! Our clocks changed last night so we got an extra hour of sleep but somehow it never feels that way. Today I have my second last page for October, only one more page to go, plus the cover once I put it all together.
today’s journal page . . .
Today’s spread is inspired by another favourite Halloween movie – Beetlejuice (1988). I have a few quotes from this movie, one is even a Poe-related joke!
The only one I think I can deal with is Edgar Allan Poe’s daughter. I think she understands me. — Betelgeuse

When I think about Beetlejuice, I think of the iconic image of him sitting on his throne/headstone as depicted in the movie posters, DVD covers etc, so that’s the one that I think most people would recognise. I started with Beetlejuice himself working out how I wanted to position him on my page, then did some pencil sketching then with ink. I blocked in some of his main features so that I wouldn’t forget about them later on, including the stripes on his suit and the shadows around his eyes. It won’t win any awards but I think it’s close enough to recognise him if you know the movie.
I drew in the throne/headstone using paint pens, and then since he would be in a graveyard, drew in two more headstones at wonky angles, just to get a rough idea of the scene
I knew that I wanted to include the flashing Betelgeuse sign so I pencilled that in, before painting the rest of the background with purple acrylic.
I added more detail and shading to the headstones and then painted the sign in bright yellows
I was thinking about what to attach the floating sign to, and also thinking of how to hide the masking tape down the centre of my pages, and the answer was, to draw a creepy tree that would serve both purposes!
Next day I added the finishing touches to the page. The sign is what always springs to mind when I think about images from this movie. It has flashing lights and a big red arrow that points towards Betelgeuse. I made mine a little differently.
I had some trouble trying to do his hair, which is wild in the movie, white mostly with touches of yellow. The green stuff on his face is supposed to be decay lol.
I don’t have any glow-in-the-dark paint on this one but I did do some outlining with fluorescent neon pens to give an eerie glow to the scene.

Augh. anyhow, I definitely knew what you were referring to with this page, and you did a great job.
